Matt and I have always dreamed of owning a nice sized piece of property and a farm house. Our ultimate dream is to own several acres of land with goats and chickens. However, on our teacher salaries we do what we can with what we’ve got.
We got married in 2016 and saved up to buy a house the following year. After months of looking we finally found it. A well kept little farm house on an acre of land. After living in an apartment for several years an acre felt limitless. The perfect place to learn how to be better gardeners and try new things.
Our first year garden was modest, we were starting from scratch. Matt dug and built a few raised beds and I got to work smothering weeds to create flower beds (I’m determined to feed the bees).
Overall the tomatoes, kale, and peppers did well. We had trouble with the beets and potatoes. I also had a major cabbage worm infestation that I was not prepared for. We bought a row cover for our leafy greens to hopefully prevent that problem this year.
Here are some things we would like to try this year:
- sweet potatoes (we live in a zone 5 so I’m not sure how these will do)
- Planting dwarf apple trees and black berry bushes
- expanding the number of garden beds
- continue to hoard insect friendly flowers
What are your plans for growing in 2019?
A lovely beginning. Congratulations on a good gardening start. Just a suggestion…you might want to compress your photos for “web pages” for your blog. They took FOREVER to download for me and other would-be readers may not have the patience to wait that long and just click on to the next blog. Plant anise hyssop in your bee and butterfly garden…it blooms from May until hard frost and comes back each year. Tidy foliage, pretty purple flowers, fragrant, not bothered by any pests and makes a delicious honey when the bees harvest its nectar. Good cut flower, too.

Thank you for the tips! I hadn’t thought about the picture size being an issue. I will add those flowers to my list!
